Instagram just hit a mind-blowing milestone: 3 billion monthly active users.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg broke the news in a Threads post, joking with a Breaking Bad meme captioned “Billions with a B.” Shortly after, Instagram head Adam Mosseri confirmed the announcement with his own celebratory posts.
What makes this number so wild is how quickly Instagram has scaled. The app reached 2 billion users in 2022, meaning it added another billion in just a couple of years. That’s lightning-fast growth for a platform that’s been around for over a decade.
One big reason? Reels. Launched in 2020 as Meta’s answer to TikTok, the short-form video format gave users a fresh way to create, share, and endlessly scroll. YouTube followed with Shorts, but Instagram’s version helped the app keep its momentum and fend off TikTok’s rise. Today, TikTok still has a massive audience at about 1 billion users—but that’s only a third of Instagram’s reach.
It’s worth remembering that Instagram wasn’t always a giant. When Facebook (now Meta) bought it back in 2012, the platform had just 30 million monthly users. What it did have was a clean design, loyal community, and huge potential. Zuckerberg saw it as the future of social media—and he was right.
Fast forward to now, and Instagram has grown from those humble beginnings into a platform that drives nearly half of Meta’s annual revenue. From 30 million to 3 billion, it’s safe to say Instagram has become a cornerstone of the internet.
