OpenAI just announced a big update: you can now use third-party apps directly inside ChatGPT. The company revealed this new feature at its DevDay event.
According to ChatGPT, “Apps fit naturally into conversation. You can discover them when ChatGPT suggests one at the right time, or by calling them by name.”
That’s the best part — you can use ChatGPT’s conversational search to get results from other apps without leaving the chat.
For example, you can ask Spotify for a playlist, and it will deliver it right in ChatGPT. The same goes for Zillow — you can search for homes to rent or buy without opening the Zillow website.
The first time you use an app in ChatGPT, you’ll need to log in. After that, you can either call the app yourself or let ChatGPT suggest it when it’s relevant.
Right now, the apps available include Spotify, Zillow, Canva, Coursera, and Figma. OpenAI plans to add more soon, including AllTrails, Target, Uber, Khan Academy, Instacart, Peloton, TheFork, TripAdvisor, Thumbtack, DoorDash, and OpenTable.
For now, only major apps are being released, but developers will be able to submit their own ChatGPT apps later this year. They can start building and testing apps in the Apps SDK preview.
If this rollout goes well — and it likely will — OpenAI plans to keep expanding third-party app integration. They’ll also bring apps to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu, making it easier than ever to automate tasks with ChatGPT.
