Tesla’s New Charging Fee: Quick Guide for Drivers

Tesla has almost 2,000 charging stations in the U.S., each with about 22,000 chargers. With over a million Teslas on the road, these charging spots can get pretty crowded, especially during holidays.

To deal with this, Tesla has introduced a new fee. If your Tesla is at 90% charge and you keep it plugged in, you’ll be charged $1 per minute. This is to encourage people to free up the charging spots for others.

Before, there was a fee if you left your car plugged in after it was done charging. Now, this new fee will replace that in busy locations. Your Tesla’s screen will show when the fee starts, and you have 5 minutes to unplug without getting charged.

Tesla’s charging stations are popular, but there’s a catch. There were over 1.3 million Teslas delivered in 2022, and by the end of 2023, there will be even more. While the charging stations are great, they can’t keep up with the growing number of cars. The new fee helps, but experts say Tesla needs to add more charging stations quickly.

Tesla is also letting non-Tesla electric cars use their charging stations, which will make them even busier. If Tesla doesn’t add more charging spots soon, there could be long waits for everyone.

In short, Tesla is trying to manage the crowd at its charging stations by charging a fee if you stay plugged in after reaching 90%. But to solve the problem for everyone, they need to build more charging stations fast.
