The Crease-Free iPhone Fold?

Foldable phones just won’t die. When they were first announced a few years back, I was firmly in the “…but why?” camp. Yet here we are, and the foldable crowd is thriving—people who want tablet-sized screens without the tablet-sized pockets.

At this point, nearly every major tech company has thrown their hat into the foldable ring…except one: Apple. The company that loves its clean, predictable iPhone lineup has stayed on the sidelines while Samsung and Google experiment with designs, hinges, and whatever wizardry keeps a screen from snapping in half.

But don’t mistake silence for inaction. Apple is working on a foldable iPhone—they’re just waiting until they can deliver it with classic “Apple perfection.” And according to a new report, they may have finally cracked the biggest problem of all: the crease.

Every folding phone today has that dreaded center ripple caused by the hinge. Some people don’t care. Personally, it’s a dealbreaker. I can’t unsee it. But UDN, a publication in China, claims Apple has developed a folding display with an invisible crease, based on tips from supply-chain sources. If true, the iPhone Fold could be the first foldable that actually looks seamless.

Interestingly, the display itself is reportedly from Samsung, but the hinge system and other internals are all Apple—designed in-house with a few outside partners. I have no idea what kind of engineering voodoo makes a crease disappear, but if they pulled it off, it’s a legit breakthrough.

Of course, there’s a catch: another report says this thing could cost around $2,400. On principle alone, that price tag launches me straight back into the “absolutely not” camp.

We’ll find out soon enough. The foldable iPhone is allegedly entering pre–mass production now and could debut alongside the iPhone 18 in September 2026—less than a year away. Whether it’s worth the hype (and the cost) is another story entirely.
