Normally, when a gaming console has been out for a while, the price drops. That’s not happening with the PlayStation 5. Instead, Sony just announced that prices are going up — and tariffs are the reason.

Every version of the PS5 is getting a $50 increase. The standard PS5 is moving from $499.99 to $549.99, the PS5 Digital Edition from $449.99 to $499.99, and the PS5 Pro from $699.99 to $749.99. These changes take effect this week.

“Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment,” Isabelle Tomatis, Sony’s VP of Global Marketing, wrote in a blog post. “As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21.”

Sony didn’t mention tariffs outright, but the connection is obvious. President Trump’s latest tariff plan adds heavy taxes on imports, including 30% on goods from China and 15% from Japan. Those costs ripple through the supply chain and eventually hit consumers.

To ease the pressure, Sony says it’s working on diversifying where its consoles are made. Interestingly, the PS5s sold in the U.S. aren’t actually manufactured in China, but the wider supply chain still feels the impact.

Other gaming companies are in the same boat. Microsoft bumped up Xbox prices in May, and Nintendo both raised the cost of the original Switch and delayed pre-orders for the Switch 2, citing tariffs directly. With electronics prices rising across the board, it’s no surprise gamers are starting to feel it in their wallets.

Sony stressed that these increases only apply to the U.S. For now, other regions won’t see price hikes — though Europe already got one back in April.

So here we are: PlayStation 5 prices climbing before GTA VI even drops.
