YouTube is taking a major step toward protecting younger viewers with a brand-new AI-powered age verification system. The platform will now use artificial intelligence to determine whether users are over 18—without relying solely on the birthdate they enter when signing up.
How YouTube’s AI Age Verification Works
YouTube’s new system scans user activity to estimate their real age. This includes:
- Search and watch history
- Content interaction patterns
- How long the account has existed
According to James Beser, YouTube’s Director of Product Management, the rollout will start with a small set of users in the U.S.:
“Over the next few weeks, we’ll begin to roll out machine learning to a small set of users in the US to estimate their age, so that teens are treated as teens and adults as adults,” he shared in a company blog post.
If the AI believes an account belongs to a minor, YouTube will automatically activate protections to create a safer experience.
What Happens If YouTube Thinks You’re a Minor?
If the AI flags an account as under 18, several changes will kick in:
- Targeted ads will be disabled
- Certain videos may be restricted
- YouTube’s digital wellbeing tools will be enabled
This move is meant to limit exposure to mature content and protect kids from inappropriate videos.
Adults May Need to Verify Their Age
There’s always the chance AI could get it wrong. If an adult user is mistakenly restricted, YouTube will require proof of age—like a government-issued ID or credit card—to lift the limitations.
In short, the responsibility to prove age falls on the user if the system locks them out of adult content.
