Apple Is Bringing Back AI News Summaries – Hopefully It Works This Time

Apple is giving its AI news summary feature another shot. The tool, called Apple Intelligence, was first introduced in iOS 18 but was pulled in the 18.3 update because it wasn’t working right. It was meant to give users short summaries of news stories from different apps, all in one place. Sounds great in theory—but the execution fell short.

The problem? The summaries were often off. Sometimes the AI pulled random or irrelevant info from the articles, and other times it flat-out made things up. Not everyone experienced these issues, but the ones that did were bad enough to get attention. With so much misinformation already online, having AI add to the confusion didn’t go over well.

Now, Apple says they’ve fixed it. The updated feature is rolling out again in the new iOS 26 beta. If you install the beta, you’ll get a pop-up asking if you want to try it and letting you choose which apps it pulls news from. This is new—before, there was no way to opt in or out.

Apple’s also trying to be more clear about what the AI is doing. From now on, any AI-generated summaries will be in italics and clearly labeled “Summarized by Apple Intelligence.” You’ll also be able to tap and see the original app notifications the summary is based on, so you can double-check the source for yourself.

Since it’s still in beta, Apple is asking for feedback. There’s a new option that lets you report any summaries that seem wrong or misleading.

Let’s hope this time, it actually gets the facts straight.
