How to Record Video on iPhone Without Stopping Your Music in iOS 18

The iPhone has always been a technological marvel, but there’s one thing it hasn’t been able to do for 17 years: record video without stopping your music.

If you were jamming to music on Spotify or Apple Music and tried to take a video, the music would stop as soon as you opened the camera. This was especially annoying if the music would’ve made the perfect soundtrack to your video.

There was a workaround, though. If you held down the capture button in “Photo” mode to record video (a feature called QuickTake), your music wouldn’t stop. However, the video quality wasn’t as good.

Now, with iOS 18, this issue is finally fixed! You can record video and keep your music playing without needing any tricks. Here’s how to set it up:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Go to Camera.
  3. Tap Record Sound.
  4. Switch Allow Audio Playback to “On.”

With this setting enabled, your music, podcast, or any audio will keep playing while you record video. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • If audio is playing through your iPhone speakers, it’ll record in mono.
  • If it’s playing through a Bluetooth speaker or other external device, it’ll record in stereo.
  • If you’re using headphones, the audio won’t be captured in the video.

If you don’t care about hearing the music in your video but just don’t want it interrupted, feel free to leave it on.

Of course, there are times when you may not want the audio to keep playing while recording. In that case, you can either pause the music or go back to settings and toggle off Allow Audio Playback.

iOS 18 is available now—update your iPhone and enjoy the new feature!
