Google Plans Gemini AI for Kids—But Is It Too Soon?

Google is developing a kid-friendly version of its AI assistant, Gemini, designed for children under 13. Parents of supervised Google accounts received an email outlining the upcoming feature, which could help kids with homework and creative writing.

While the idea sounds helpful, concerns are already surfacing. Some worry that kids might rely on AI too much and stop developing key learning skills. Accuracy is another issue—Google itself warned parents that Gemini may sound human but isn’t always correct.

“Remind your child that Gemini isn’t human,” the email states. “It can’t think or feel, even if it sounds like it can.”

That reminder is important. AI like Gemini can speak convincingly, but it sometimes gives wrong or made-up answers when it doesn’t know something. This can be especially misleading for kids, who may not have the experience to fact-check what they’re told.

This trust issue isn’t new. Many adults already assume AI is always right—even when it isn’t. And with kids getting their own version of Gemini, the risk of spreading misinformation could grow.

AI can be a helpful tool, but parents and educators may need to step in to guide kids on how—and when—to trust what it says.
