Apple updates its operating systems every year, bringing fresh features to iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. While we see smaller updates throughout the year, Apple occasionally takes a bigger step by redesigning the entire system. According to recent reports, that time is coming soon.
A Major Redesign Is on the Way
Sources close to Apple told Bloomberg that the company is working on a complete software redesign, expected to launch later this year as iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16.
This would be the first full iPhone software overhaul since iOS 7 in 2013. On the Mac side, the last major redesign was macOS Big Sur in 2020. If the reports are true, Apple is gearing up for a major visual refresh across all its devices.
A Unified Look Across Apple Devices
The redesign will introduce new buttons, icons, menus, and windows to create a more seamless experience across Apple’s ecosystem. Apple’s goal is to make the iPhone, iPad, and Mac feel more unified, ensuring a smoother transition when switching between devices.
Reportedly, the company is using visionOS, the software powering the Vision Pro headset, as inspiration. While the Vision Pro hasn’t reached mainstream popularity, Apple is looking to align its design language across all platforms.
Apple’s Mixed Track Record with Software Design
Apple’s design changes don’t always land well with users. For example, the new Photos app in iOS 18 has received criticism for being harder to navigate and limiting multitasking options. If Apple is truly redesigning its entire OS, they need to ensure it’s both visually appealing and user-friendly.
When Will We Hear More?
If Apple is moving forward with this redesign, we’ll likely get our first look at WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) this summer. However, if they decide to delay the update, we may not hear anything about it until next year.
For now, all eyes are on Apple to see whether they’ll push forward with their biggest software update in years. Stay tuned!
