Apple has just released iOS 18.3, and with it comes a deeper integration of AI. The big news? Apple Intelligence is now on by default—no need to opt in.
What’s New in iOS 18.3?
Apple has been gradually rolling out its AI-powered assistant, Apple Intelligence, over the past few months. Even with this update, it’s still considered in beta. But if you update your iPhone today, you’ll get access to:
- AI-generated images
- Text writing assistance
- Summaries of long texts, emails, and messages
However, these features are only available on 2024 iPhone models and Pro models from 2023.
AI Summaries Now Clearly Labeled
One big change in iOS 18.3 is how AI-generated summaries are presented. Now, when AI summarizes a large block of text, you’ll see it in italics under a “Summarized by Apple Intelligence” heading. This helps you know when AI is at work, instead of it operating unnoticed in the background.
AI News Summaries Put on Hold
If you’ve been using Apple Intelligence to summarize news articles, you may notice that this feature is temporarily unavailable. Apple is reworking it due to reports that AI-generated summaries were inaccurate or completely fabricated.
This issue isn’t unique to Apple—ChatGPT and other AI chatbots have also been known to generate false information. AI still has a long way to go before it can be fully trusted for important news summaries.
Can You Turn Off Apple Intelligence?
Not everyone wants AI integrated into their iPhone. Whether it’s due to privacy concerns or personal preference, you can disable Apple Intelligence—but you have to do it manually.
How to Turn Off Apple Intelligence:
- Open Settings
- Tap Apple Intelligence & Siri
- Toggle off Apple Intelligence
AI Is Here to Stay—But Apple Is Taking It Slow
AI is clearly becoming a core part of the iPhone experience. While Apple is moving forward cautiously, iOS 18.3 shows they are committed to AI. Whether you embrace it or prefer to disable it, at least you now have more control over how AI interacts with your device.
