Foldable smartphones are still new and slowly making their way into mainstream use, but they haven’t yet found the perfect design to make them a staple. Huawei believes they’ve figured it out with their new tri-fold phone, the Huawei Mate XT. They’re so confident in this device that they’re launching it on the same day Apple releases the iPhone 16.
A teaser video confirmed the Mate XT’s release, but the exact design remains under wraps. A poster for the event hints at a Z-shaped phone, but we’ll have to wait until the unveiling on September 10th to see the full design.
This will be the first tri-fold smartphone, featuring a 10-inch display when fully opened. However, all the extra hardware means it’s likely to be one of the most expensive phones on the market, which could hurt its adoption since high prices make it less accessible to the average consumer.
It’s also unclear if Huawei is ready to launch the Mate XT or if they’re just showing off a prototype. If it’s the latter, there could be a long wait before it’s available.
Aside from the phone, Huawei is also expected to reveal more about their upcoming EV and smartwatch. Meanwhile, Apple’s iPhone 16 will hit the market a few hours before Huawei’s event. Regardless of Huawei’s ambitions, it’s unlikely they’ll steal the spotlight from Apple’s annual launch.
