According to a Forbes survey, about 46% of those with hearing loss aren’t comfortable wearing hearing aids, and only 38% of users wear them every day.
Why are so many people skipping out on hearing aids when they could be helpful? Let’s break it down:
- Cost Concerns: Hearing aids can be expensive, sometimes costing around $2,500 or more. Plus, many insurance plans don’t cover them. However, some, like Medicare Advantage and Medicaid, do offer coverage. The World Health Organization (WHO) is also working to make hearing care more accessible, especially in lower-income areas.
- Trust Issues: Some people are wary of audiologists, thinking they’re just out to make a sale. But audiologists are bound by ethical guidelines to prioritize their patients’ well-being. A good hearing aid package should cover everything from testing to follow-up appointments.
- Social Stigma: Nearly half of the survey respondents felt there was a stigma attached to wearing hearing aids, especially among younger adults. However, those who do wear them regularly report less stigma. Plus, modern hearing aids are designed to be discreet, so they’re not as noticeable.
Improving hearing health is important, and organizations like WHO are making strides. But with so many people missing out on the benefits of hearing aids, there’s still work to be done.
