eBay is unveiling a novel AI tool tailored for its marketplace sellers, designed to create product listings using just a single photo as input. Initially, this feature will be available on eBay’s iOS app, with an Android version slated to follow in the coming weeks. This innovative tool can autonomously generate a title and product description based on the provided image. Additionally, it suggests pertinent details such as product release dates, category, subcategory, list price, and shipping costs.

This development is part of eBay’s broader efforts to integrate AI into the selling process, complementing previous initiatives like AI-generated product catalog descriptions and a photo background removal tool for listings.

An eBay spokesperson clarified that this “photo-to-listing” tool was developed in-house and will use the data generated from listings to further enhance the model. The company emphasized its commitment to leveraging AI to streamline and transform the listing process, making it more user-friendly and efficient for sellers.

In May, eBay’s Head of U.S. Business, Adam Ireland, revealed plans for a plugin that would enable sellers to automatically generate item descriptions based on existing web content, powered by an OpenAI language model. This tool release aligns with that vision.

eBay’s primary objective with this tool is to address the challenges faced by first-time sellers, often overwhelmed by the extensive information required to create competitive listings. By automating the listing creation process, eBay aims to reduce these barriers and enable new sellers to get started quickly.

However, some veteran eBay sellers have expressed dissatisfaction with the platform’s AI direction. Forums and subreddits frequented by sellers have seen complaints about the quality of eBay’s description generator, which has been in limited testing. Users have reported inaccuracies and verbosity in the AI-generated descriptions, which sometimes fail to provide crucial details about product flaws.

Critics also express concern about the accuracy of eBay’s photo recognition component, given the historical bias issues associated with computer vision algorithms.

Despite these challenges and concerns raised by sellers, eBay’s AI-driven approach mirrors similar moves by other e-commerce giants like Shopify and Amazon. These companies have also explored AI-generated product descriptions and content summaries to enhance their platforms and improve search engine discoverability.
